How to find your ring size at home before ordering online

Wrap a paper strip around your finger, measure it in millimeters and match it to the US size chart. Measure late in the day, and if you are between two sizes, take the larger one.

To find your ring size at home, wrap a strip of paper or a piece of thread around the base of your finger, mark where it meets, and measure that length in millimeters. Find the number in the circumference column of the US size chart below, or measure the inside of a ring that already fits and use the diameter column. Measure at the end of the day, and if you land between two sizes, take the larger one.

What do US ring sizes measure?

Rings with a size option in our rings and couple rings use US sizes, from 5 to 13. Each size matches an inside diameter (the width across the inside of the ring) and an inside circumference (the distance around the inside, which equals the distance around your finger).

US sizeInside diameter (mm)Inside circumference (mm)
515.749.3
616.551.9
717.354.4
818.157.0
918.959.5
1019.862.1
1120.664.6
1221.467.2
1322.269.7

The steps are small. One full size adds about 2.5 mm around the finger and less than 1 mm across, so a careful measurement beats a guess.

Two ways to measure at home

You need a ruler with millimeter marks, a pen, and either a strip of paper or a ring that already fits.

With a strip of paper or thread

  • Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Paper is better than thread because it does not stretch.
  • Wrap it around the base of the finger the ring is for. It should feel like a ring that fits: snug, not tight.
  • Mark the spot where the end overlaps.
  • Lay the strip flat on the ruler and read the length in millimeters.
  • Find that number in the circumference column. A reading of 55 mm sits between a 7 (54.4) and an 8 (57.0), so you take the 8.

Measure two or three times, and if the readings differ, go with the larger one.

With a ring that already fits

If you own a ring that fits the same finger well, its inside diameter gives you the size. Lay it flat on the ruler and measure straight across the middle, from inside edge to inside edge, without counting the metal. Match the number to the diameter column: 17.6 mm falls between a 7 (17.3) and an 8 (18.1), so you take the 8.

This is quick but less forgiving. Half a millimeter across is more than half a size, and a ruler is hard to read that finely. If you can, try both methods and compare.

Three mistakes that give you the wrong size

Measuring cold fingers

Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat. A reading taken in a cold, air-conditioned room or right after a cold shower can come out too small. Measure at room temperature at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest. Lebanese summers are hot and humid, so a ring that is snug in January can feel tight in August.

Forgetting the knuckle

A ring has to pass over the knuckle before it reaches the base of the finger. If your knuckle is clearly wider than the base, measure both and choose a size between the two readings, so the ring goes over the knuckle without sitting loose once it is on.

Ignoring the band width

A wide band covers more of the finger, so it fits tighter than a thin band of the same size. Many of our rings list the band width as Surface Width in the product details. For a band about 6 mm wide or more, lean toward the larger size whenever you are unsure.

The Arabic Love Ring is a slim 2.5 mm band in sizes 7, 8 and 9. The Shiny Crystal Gold Ring is 6 mm wide, so on that one the larger of two sizes is the safer pick.

Which rings come in sizes, and which adjust?

On a product page, a Ring Size option means you choose a US size from the chart above. A crossed-out size is sold out at the moment. The Fashionable Simple Scrub Ring and the Romantic Classic Crystal Ring in Gold Rings have a Ring Size option from 5 to 13, and so does the Shinny Crystal Ring in Silver Rings. All four rings below let you pick your size.

Some rings have no size option. When the details describe a ring as adjustable or open-end, the band can be eased a little wider or narrower to fit, as with the Roman Numeral Ring and The Chain Ring. When a ring has no size option and the details say nothing about adjusting, ask us on WhatsApp through the contact page before you order.

To adjust an open ring, press the ends together or ease them apart slowly, a little at a time. Bending the same spot back and forth weakens the metal. For how plated and stainless steel hold up and how to care for them, see our guide to gold-plated vs stainless steel jewelry.

Sizing couple rings

Couple rings mean two fingers and two measurements. Measure both people the same way, at the same time of day, and write each size next to the right name.

The rings in Gold Couple Rings have two options on the product page: Gender (Female or Male) and Ring Size. Several in Silver Couple Rings are described as adjustable instead, with no size to choose.

The product details do not always make clear whether one order is a single ring or the pair. Check the product page, or ask us on WhatsApp through the contact page, before you order, so each of you ends up with the right size.

How do you size a ring as a surprise?

The easiest way is to borrow a ring they wear on the same finger and measure its inside diameter, as above. A ring from another finger gives the wrong size, so check where they wear it first.

If you cannot take the ring out of the house, trace its inside edge on paper with a sharp pencil and measure across the circle later. Or ask a sibling or a close friend, who may know the size or can borrow a ring for you.

If you have no measurement at all, an adjustable ring is the safer choice. All four below are described as adjustable in their details: two open-end bands for men or women (the Engraved Golden Ring and the Roman Numeral Ring), The Chain Ring for women, and the Crown Love Couple Rings.

Questions people ask

What if I am between two sizes?

Take the larger one. A slightly loose ring is easier to live with than one that will not pass your knuckle, and with a wide band the larger size matters even more.

Should I measure my right hand or my left?

Measure the exact finger, on the hand the ring will be worn on. Fingers on your writing hand are often slightly larger, so a size taken from one hand may not fit the other.

Do adjustable rings fit every finger?

They fit a range, not every size. An open ring can be eased a little wider or narrower around its starting size, and the details sometimes give that size: the Attractive Gold Rings are listed as size 7 and adjustable. If you measure well above or below that, choose a ring with a Ring Size option.
